Let's get something straight right from the outset.  Estimating systems are designed to calculate the likely cost of manufacturing a piece of printed material.  Once they have done this they will provide some highly effective tools to the estimator to uplift costs, and apply margins to a suggested price.

Using the latest systems can help printers keep costs down while working with many short contracts, says Nosmot Gbadamosi.

Management information systems (MIS) do exactly what they say on the tin; a basic MIS will provide job estimates, improve stock control and look after costing.  It can help a company to manage its business, providing detailed tracking and calculating costs.  In short, with the trend towards shorted contracts, using an MIS can aid printers in keeping costs down while taking on more work.
